One of the last people to view this site was searching for "wet pushies", I think they were actually looking for "wet pussies".
I should update this site more often, but life has taken me on a wild and crazy journey. My current Blog, www.oxygencyles.com gives a vague idea of what I've been up to, but basically I live at work six days a week and hang out with my boy one day a week. Sometimes I might ride a bike further than the 7kms from home to work, but only sometimes.

ellie's about to pop, and I'm about to burst with nervous energy. Everyone whose had kids likes to remind you that as soon as the little one arrives your sleep will go out the window. No-one ever says that in the last weeks of waiting your sleep goes out the window cause your so excited you keep on waking up in the middle of the night to see if anything has happened.

Bikewise I'm also excited. I've just got myself a pair of Bontrager Switchblade XC rigid forks with carbon lowers so I can ressurrect my trusty Norco Fireball as the commuter bike from hell. And I'm hoping the new damper cartridge I need for my Scalpel arrives soon. I've also recently acquired a pair of Velocity Blade wheels for my roadie (1410g for the pair!) which has made it all the nicer to ride. And to top if off took a 06 Cannondale Chase 3 out of stock, hooked a Juicy 5 running a 203mm rotor to the front wheel and have been playing at riding like a 15 year old.

However in the spirit of moderation I sold my Eastern Elemnt 20" BMX (I'm 6'2", it's impossible for me to look cool on anything with wheels smaller than 26", and even then I look all long and gangly).

Contrary to popular belief I am still alive. I just got a bit distracted. I'm officially slow, fatter than I've ever been and lazy when it comes to to training. And am now one of those people who plans to start planning to train some time down the track. Let's see if my current rediscovery of the joys of hurting all over stays with me enough for the pain to subside and the joy of riding through a forest at an unsafe speed can kick in instead. Love you all, even though I know no one bothers to read an annually updated blog, which honestly should be retitled Pushies, Pasta, Rammed Earth Houses, Baby to Be and Small Business that Consumes my Whole Life.

Just spent four days working with Bike SA at the Melrose Fat Tyre Festival. Of course I manged to leave my camera in the tent all day every day so no cool pictures. I managed to arrive with a cold kicking in to full effect so even though I saw and rode on some of the best single track I've ever seen, I just couldn't let go and enjoy it half as much as it deserved. The North Star Pub was great, Mount Remarkable showed why it was thus named and the local reds were more than tempting.

The Sunday XC race at the Bartagunyah winery property was the hardest XC event i've ever done. The track is on of the most demanding XC tracks I've raced on and the combo of hot dry air, an aweful cold and massive climbs and rocks, rocks and more rocks made me struggle to finish my second lap. I think the fastest riders were doing laps just under 40 minutes, with the slowest rider lapping at nearly 2 hours. It was nice to see three members of Team Ballistic dominate elites, with Brett Anderson proving once again that he loves it when the going gets tough, opening a hard won gap over Adrwian Whitworth and Ashley Wass. Tim Anderson justifed his title of Grandmaster Tim by taking out Masters A in fine style. Goto amtbc.com for proper results.

12 months since last sighting

Wow, a new record for sustained slackness in the face of little or no excuse. Actually I've got sort of a big excuse, but not a really good enough one to explain twelve months of no posting. Guess I'll have to work hard to make this site worth visiting again.

My excuse is this, small business is time consuming. I've taken the big leap, Ellie and I now have our own tiny bike shop, in our own tiny town. Our shop is called Oxygen Cycles (after our two favourite things, oxygen and bicycles) and is located in the village of McLaren Vale, a town best known for Shiraz and other red grapes. We live in Willunga which is sweet, when the Tour Down Under rolls through we get to what the start on our way to work, watch the race from the shop's verandah and then get to do victory waves everyday on the way home when we cross the finish line. There's also a giant crown painted on the road at the top of the hill, three pubs and a couple of cafes.

I promise to write more in future and even post up heaps of photos and stuff like that.

Contary to popular rumours circulated by myself I am actually still in existence. Yeah it's been three months since using this thing, but you get that. Now I'm back and I'm going to post some pictures again. YAY!!!!!!!!!

This lot is from the AMBC 12hr held last weekend. I wandered around for 12 hours drinking beer, eating junk food, taking photos and occassionally helping Ellie and Lars out with stuff. Oh, and giving Timmm a hard time about bending his rear deraileur on his first lap.

Once again Mt Torrens ate lots of people's bikes. Brett's brand new Turner Nitrous snapped a chainstay, Timmm bent his rear deraileur, Peter Harsmaa broke a spoke on lap 1, Timmm put a stick through his front tyre, heaps of other people bent derailleurs, busted spokes, and/or cut themselves up nicely. Chris Jongelwald (National XC Champion)even managed to cut his face up, which on top of the fact that his 4 man JT/Avanti team was being beaten by Team Moonunit Brett (17 years old), Timmm (who hates XC) and Ash (who left early to go to wedding), really pissed him off.

I loved it, I got to take photos, supported Lars (solo winner), Team Moonunit (2nd overall) and Ellie (Dead F***ing Last), drank a six-pack and ate so much junk food I got a mouth ulcer.

I'm still alive. Did the Pedal-prix thing over a week ago. We came second, only relief is knowing that the team that beat us had one of the nations top time-trialers and we pushed Ballistic to breaking point. Here's a link to a picture of us after we won the six hour. We weren't so glowing at the end of the 24. Well there's always next year.

In other news I've had a go at being a Bike Ed instructor, "Now kids, this is what you should not do...", and am contemplating the jump form bike shop botherer to bike shop propreitor.

But in the meantime I'm trying to focus on the Mont 24hr. Me, myself and I verse 100 or so other loons in the forests of Canberra. YAY!!!!!!!!

weird year for me so far with crashes, neck problems and too much school and work. I'm assuming I won't be a major threat for the top of the podium, but a top five placing isn't being too ridiculous (I think). Anyways, a top ten gets me a World's Solo 24 qualifier and I should be happy with that if I get it. However I must admit, I like getting prizes and despite having podium placed at three of the four 24hr events I've entered I've yet to get my ugly face in a magazine and I'm starting to think that there's a conspiracy against SA riders.

Yeah conspiracy, this is how I see it... Three SA riders get their name/ picture in MTB magazines, Chris Jonglewald (apols for speeling), Sean Lewis and Kay Harsmaan. The rest of us get either anonymous photos, Ashley Waas most common anonymous SA rider, or in my case an indirect quote in Enduro magazine "... the solo winner...". HOW THE F*** ARE WE MEANT TO GET SPONSORS IF WE DON"T EXIST UNTIL WE TAKE OUT THE NATIONALS?????????

Anyway, to address the imbalance we will keep on riding faster than those who live on the East coast until everyone realises there's something in the water down here, and I'm not just referring to unsafe levels of chlorine.

Yay, you can tell I'm getting seriously close to an assignment deadline, I'm on blogger again! Actually the main reason I'm here now is to document that I copy and pasted a paragraph from my essay onto wikipedia, and not vice versa. I suddenly realised that I'm probably going to get accused of plagarism as the software the uni uses to check for online plagarism will definitely pick-up on the similiarity (100%) between the third paragraph of my essay on symbionts and the wikipedia entry for Bruchnera. A lesson is to be learnt, don't use your homework to contribute to the wikipedia, until you've handed it in. DOH!!!!!!!!!1

I live for 24 hr endurance events, maybe thats why I have worked so hard to ensure I still have to come up with 1000 words to say about N. Typhlops (Southern MArsupial moles in human speak) in the next 24 hrs. So let's waste some time by giving everyone who doesn't care a little insight into these little critters.

They're small.
They live underground munching on ant larvae.
They're marsupials
Foxes, dingoes and cats like them (which is a bad thing)
Scientists have a hard time finding them
They have no eyes
They don't live long in captivity
They live in sand dunes
they're very cute
They've been around for a while (60MY)
I hope they don't go extinct.

Found cool windy singletrack at Prospect Hill, just down the road form the current race track and road one of the less gnarly downhills at Kangarilla (AKA gate 19).

Now I know what it's like to be manipulated. And I've got an appointment to go through it again. Children, don't be scared of the dentist, the CHIROPRACTOR is much scarier. I've been walking around doing a Batman impersersonation, not the "blammmo!" sixties batman, but the stiffed necked, can't look back, can't look down style of batman. The vertebrae in my spine have been knocked around, may be something to do with my technique of breaking my fall with the side of my head. So now I need to pay to get manipulated.

There'll be a lot of photos from Greg, Paul and Ben's party above this in a day or so. They were taken by me and Ellie, I've been using really long exposure times and small aperture openings to get some cool effects. Ellie takes most of the photos with the flash, I used to hate it, but am getting to work out how to use for cool effects.

Over this, going to go down and see how poss and will are going in the garden.

The good news is the machine survived, the bad news is, it's not a lap-top anymore. Why is it every expensive thing I brake is some non-standard piece of equipment that needs non-standard parts. I can't believe I'm using a ten-year old monitor and keboard to access the innards of what was a rad lapt-top. I guess I could stick a handle on top of this monitor and call it portable.

One down, two to go.

Chem wasn't that bad, answered almost everything, feeling pretty good.

Now geology and biology. Biology I'm feeling good about. I've got notes for almost everything, did amaziungly well on my essay. Geology, not so good. For starters I'm barely passing, for seconders, somehow they managed to actually teach us stuff. Not that IU haven't learnt anything in Biol or Chem, but, we covered about 4 times the actual content in Geol as we did in the other subjects. On one hand I'm glad, my HECS dollars aren't going to waste, on the other, I'm panicking, how can I lern so much stuff, especially when I've got such important stuff to do like blah, blah, blah on this blog....

School doesn't raelly suck, however, EXAMS BLOW!

I'm over it and they haven't even started. Looking at just passing Chemistry unless I learn a whole lot of stuff in the next 24hrs. Then the real fun starts with Geology and Biology. I wish I had another week for Geology, feel so out of my depth and I need to pull off sopmething amazing. Chem's not looking that bad really, and going into the Biol exam with 95% for my essay already under my belt.

My wrist hurts and I don't know why. I'm hungry. I need coffee. I want chocolate.

It's not really the end of the world, just thought it'd be a catchy way to start the page. I've had connectivity problems so slight delay between posts. Exams start next week. At least that means holidayts start in three weeks.

Off to Cromer this weekend for BikeSA. Hopefully I might get some photos of people actually riding. Lots of fun, logs, mud, logs, and more mud.

My b****y shock pump has self destructed, my back light abandoned ship and I still need a new helmet and saddle. Hey, at least my egg-beaters finally came back from Dirt-Works.

Started using my Shimano shoes I won last year, M221's. Very nice.

Danoz Direct to NYC

Wishing good luck to Dan W (Danoz Diret) this week as he flies off to NYC to represent Adelaide at the Bicycle Mesenger World Cup race. The world won't know what hit them, although Macca's performances in New York alley-cat's might have them watching out for us South Aussies.

Times like these I wish I was still a courier. if I could get a decent timetable I could go to school first part of the week and flex on Fridays, but once again all my free time's at he start of the week. Not the best really, as who needs super fast package delivery on a Monday?

Hope Dan does do well, he's put in a fair bit of effort trying to keep spme sort of courier culture happening here in Adelaide.

On another note, Simon Doctor had his wheels nicked while his bike was parked on Grenfell Street a couple of weeks ago. If you see anyone trying to hock a Rhyno-lite/LX wheel set at your local pawn-brokers, kick 'em in the the nuts and smash them over the head with a D-lock for me (I can't do it myself as I abhore violence of any kind.)

Where's my USB cable?

Should be posting photos of the Mt Crawford single-track and of me looking really tired as the sun rises over Cromer, but I haven't been very together with my putting away of important things lately.

Spent the weekend out at Mt Pleasant, David Hughes and I took a Bike SA 4wd down so we could map out trails for the Track and Trail ride in a fortnight. It's really hard to ride along disused single trail in a pine forest while all the time looking over your shoulder for a piece of trail you just can't find. Doesn't help when they've held a 24hr motorbike race in the same piece of forest and the once flowing XC track now is a foot-deep rut running through the forest. What really pisses me off is that they used all of our track, except the rock gardens. Why can't they make their own track and therefore increase the amount of ridable trails in the area, instead of ruining ours again and again?

Anyways, Cromer is still great, just not as fantastic as Prospect Hill or Fox Creek. Mt Pleasant itself has some cool bits of disused fire trail and the north face peak is one big ass rock garden. Best thing is the small section of multi-use trail that cuts through the native forest between Mt Pleasant and Cromer. Very short section but the trail is just a series of markers and a bridge. Quite different for a fully legal trail. Also wicked is a small disused piece of trail to the west of Cromer Shed, moss and bracken covered doubles that flows nicely, added bonus it joins up the new Starkey Rd campground with Cromer.

Little Mt Crawford Native Forest Reserve has a 1.8km single track loop that's well worth spinning round in both directions. You can get to it following the Heysen Trail from the Forestry HQ.

All-in-all the area rocks, we pulled in a hundred k's of riding around. Everything form really gnarly single trails covered in pine-needles and tree trunks to picturesque fire tracks your granny could ride a rigid along. It's just a pity the central area has been gutted by logging operations and we could only put 40km into the Bike SA ride.

Not much else has gone on in my life, lots of two-to-three hour blasts in the Adelaide hills with Will. Major level procrastination about school work. Not even eating enough pasta. Need a new saddle, my tried and trusted WTB is looking very sad, and still need a new helmet, the one I've been given/lent doesn't fit well enough to stablely mount my light.

What am I doing? What was I thinking? What is this box that hums in front of me with it's glowing lights and funny buttons?

Wierd weekend, totally blew up during race on Sunday, took too long to ride out to Prospect Hill, now I remember why road bikes don't have 2.1" ultra knobbly tyres and four inches of travel front and back. Worst race I've finished really. 28min for my last lap, ten minutes slower than the leading elite riders. Compare that to my 21minute second lap and you can see the importance of eating and drinking enough before whilst racing. Cool to see that my first two laps weren't that shocking, I wasn't trying half as hard as I should and let other riders set my pace for me.

Good ride yesterday, last day of Autumn and climbed into the fog at Mt Lofty, only to descend into the afternoon sun.

Off to Cromer to scout out trails for Bike SA track and trail this weekend. Should be fun and different.

I've just registered for Mont24HR, now all need do is front up the cash and work out how I'm getting me and Ellie there.

And Tim's emailed to tell me to update this blog to say that he IS racing Pedal Prix in September.

Addicted

I'm addicted to lots of things, coffee, pasta, sugar, my bikes, Ellie, and most recently BLOGGING and the whole new school of bottom-up networking. I'm really geting into Technorati, Wikipedia and Mozilla.

It's a Critical Mass Friday, so I'll hopefully get along and take a hundred or so photos.

I've added a couple of more bike blogs to my links list. I really like how all the bike blogs are so diverse but seem to share a wierd inner philosphy. Everyone seems to be light hearted but truly passionate about what they do. I guess it comes with the territory. It's cool seeing the different bike cultures, New York (bikeblog.blogspot.com) seems so intense. Makes you feel spoilt here with the Linnear Park all the way from the sea to the foothills and the little bit of space we're given on some roads.

Wierd how here even most of the punks wear helmets and use lights, while in New York and even Sydney and Melbourne only dorks and gear-heads use basic safety equipment. Seriously, I've smashed two helmets, that is, on two occasions I've hit the ground hard enough to have earnt more than a head-ache; and recently I've been commuting with my Vicious Arc light, and it's so good knowing that as you enter an intersection no-ones going to cut you off without having seen you. It's great even in backstreets and bike-paths, saves me ploughing through joggers and knocking over drunks on bikes without lights.

Still, we need more useful bike parking in the city. Street signs are useless when you can just pull them out and all summer there's nowhere near enough official racks along Rundle or Hindley Street. I suspect that most of the placements for bike parks are decided by someone who has shares in a pawnbrokers, that's why the racks are always in dark corners and out of sight of passer-bys.

Wicked weather today (so why am I sitting inside) about 17 degrees and cloudy, perfect for punching it up a big hill in a big gear. God, it's almost roadie weather.

I just discovered flickr. And I'm impresed. Down at the bottom of this page you'll find my Flickr badge, right now it's got photos from Ellie's circus party. this is going to get confusing juggling Flickr and Hello!, but if I get to work this blog will do be able to able to do what I started it for, act as a place to stash and share my thousands of photos. I think I'll upload scans of some of my old analog photos as well, but one thing at a time.

I must say, this Blogging thing is mucho-grando funno, i really like sitting here and typing to no-one, but typing to everyone at the same time. When you don't blog everyday it starts getting pretty random. Anyways, have added a huge pile of links to this site. I've just pilfered the list I made for the Spiral objective site, deleted some broken links and added some more.

Dirty Weekend results are up on BikeSA site, there's some bearded git on a shiny GT on the Dirty Weekend homepage. I so should have pushed myself harder, I wouldn't have broken Keith, but I could have beaten both 24hr duo entries.

Ellie and the rest of the Jervois Ave crew had a circus party at her house this weekend. WILD!! Best costume goes to Mark Timberlake who had a puppet stilt walker atached to his clothes. You've got to see it to comprehend it. Also amazing was Ellie's horse rider outfit. It's strange seeing you're girlfriend with a dark wig and ake-up. It's like their a differnent person from a distance, but when you look at their eyes or listen to their voice their normal again.

TALLBIKES are the next big thing. At least for Will anyways. We've been checking out Rat Patrol HQ and tallbikes.net, seems Will was hanging out with lots of the Euro kids when they were into scooters. I like Rat Patrols tiny little bikes with amazing lugging abilities.

Race this week at Prospect Hill, YAY!!!!!!!! I have the best dilemma, dirty the new shiny GT or take my tried and trusted Norco out for spin in the pines. There's a fair bit of climbing so the hardtail will rock in sections, although I may take the jumps faster on the GT. Hopefully we'll head up tomorrow to check out the track and I can make my mind up after that.

Pedal Prix excitement is building up again. Looks like we ill race the 6hr in July, no team Ballistic anymore, now we're Trend Ice, just doesn't have the same pizzazz. Also odd for me will be the absence of Tim and Wayne, pedal prix institutions in their own right. Anyways can't wait to get in the car again. Their's nothing like ripping around a crowded race track in a low slung, narrow wheel based recumbent trike with an open cockpitted aero-housing that looks like a shark mated with a spitfire.

Here's some of the photos from the Dirty weekend. Ellie took some and Karen Anderson took the others. This was Ellie's first attempt at racing and she did the number of laps she set out to do. I let the pressure get to me and overcooked it a bit in the pines. I ate a lot of pine needles, bent my rear-deraileur and broke my helmet. I still managed to do cover more ground than I did last year, but having real competition from Keith McQueen meant that I was going to have to pull something amazing out of my arse. Not winning aside I had the most fun I've had at a race of this nature, I feel I spent almost as much time standing around and chatting to people as I would have had I been in a team. Now I need to focus on getting my act together for Mont and the Kona24hr, right now I'm going strong but really need to lift my game to challenge the more experienced riders.

Here's a copule of photos from Wheels of Justice rally. About 4000 cyclists showed up to call for law reform after Eugene McGee got away after a hit and run where he killed local rider Ian Humphries. McGee admits to having been drinking that day but the jury found decided to believe that his running from the scene was due to 'dissociation' due to shock, rather than stupidity and guilt due to alchohol.

What a week!

It's been a bit over a week since my last post and whoa!!!

First, Wheels of Justice rally, more bikes than you could dream, and I dream about a lot of bikes. 5 big city blocks worth, dragsters, roadies, mtbs, commuters, recumbents, kiddies bikes. Big fat blokes, weekend warriors, couriers, national champions, olympians...

Then, road up to fox creek with Brett for hot lap and to do some volunteer work on the trails for Dirty weekend. Helped add a couple of new sections, including a singletrack climb that became the biggest nightmare of the race for many riders.

Party in Ironbank that night, reminded me why I'm a mountain-biker and not a raver.

Can't remember Sunday...

After months of procrastinating I lodged my 2003/2004 tax return, $3500 showed up in my bank account courtesy of the ATO on Thursday, on Wednesday I take possession of a GT idxc-1.0. My battered Norco looks very battered, the GT looks shiny and amazing. By Thursday I've already gone over the bars and added a scratch to the paintwork.

Friday, headless chook day. GT needs major work on front forks. TRAK CYCLES RULE!!!

Saturday, head up to Fox Creek for Dirty Weekend, still fiddling with bike right up to start of race.

Lose positions playing with bar-ends, about tenth over-all, third in solo-male. Try to make up time, and over the bars. More than just a scratch, have bent rear driller hanger and cracked my helmet. Now very determined to finish solidly.

I lost the race in Easter when I talked up the event to Keith McQueen at the CORC solo-only race. He came, he saw, he kicked my arse. He must be one of the nicest people I've met in the MTB scene and most of the MTB scene are very nice people. We finished the race as the Solo-Social Club, doing slow laps with other solo riders.

Now to get back into school mode...

Just posting for the sake of posting. I've added a few new links of late. All cool bike related blogs. I've been doing assignments and watching DVD's. Now I've got one week to get my body and brain into gear for the Dirty Weekend. I'm still fit as I've ever been, but I really need to spend a long day i the saddle to prepare my body for what's coming up. My biggest day of exercise as been a quick ride up singletrack through C******'s Gully, a quick fire road descent and then a flex across town to the beach for a run and a swim. Usually I'm in a big panic about these events but this time I'm over-relaxed as anything. Must run, must watch "Read or Die!".

Caught speeding six-times in six years, witnessed driving by a lunatic, leaving a man to die on the side of the road... and given a three grand fine. F*** YOU McGEE. I hope next time you drive-thru at McDonalds you choke on your fries.

Thanks for proving my attitude towards Adelaide drivers drivers is not prejudice, but reality.

Also thanks for getting Adelaide critical massers motivated once again.

Finished third in VEt A's at Adelaide Mountain Bike Club's first race of the season down at Currency Creek. Heaps of fun, still seem to ride worse at short races than I do at long ones, almost lost my balls in the creek.

CORC Solo-Only 24hr MTB Race

This is a few of the photos taken by me and Ellie at the 24hr Solo-Only race held over the Easter weekend in Canberra. We travelled with Lars and Fleur.

On the way we got in trouble for camping in the wrong part of the Murray-sunset National Park, purchased wine from the Robinvale organic winery, ate lunch on the Murrimbigee, got RBT'd and stopped in at the "Dog on the Tuckerbox".

While there I rode really well for a while before circumming to extreme neck pain (getting better), after a long lie down and a cup of coffee I put in a few hot laps, but nothing could make up for my 8hr lap that started at midnight. Lars took third place after battling with sketchy batteries. And Ellie and Fleur fed us, took photos and provided amazing support.

Andrew Bell a bike courier from Melbourne won the race after Saul Britton pushed his body past the limits of human endurance. Keith Macquire punched out a massive number of laps on his hardtail, till the seatpost broke. Bunnies were everywhere. Kangaroos added an element of excitement to the firetrails. We then drove home tired and exhausted.
